When WW II began, the U.S. Navy had just introduced monoplane fighters to the Fleet, replacing its aging biplanes. Although it wasn't as sleek and fast as the Japanese Zero, it made up for its appearance in its rugged structure and agility. It proved its worth at the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1943 and served as the mount for many American Aces throughout the war.
