About Us

Welcome to Strata Aviation Arts
Strata Aviation Arts began from a deeply personal moment after my mother expressed concern about what would happen to her World War II (very private) scrapbook when she died.
My Mother Had a Secret
Before marrying my father, my mother had been married to a dashing B-24 Co-Pilot, Second Lieutenant John A. Sweetland (B-24H Liberator, 737th Bomb Squadron, 454th Bombardment Group). Lieutenant Sweetland was recipient of the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster. Lieutenant Sweetland tragically died, along with three fellow crew members-Second Lieutenant Rudolph P. Haase (Navigator), Technical Sergeant Normand Brouillette (Flight Engineer) and Staff Sergeant William C Hazel Jr. (Aerial Gunner) - when his severely damaged aircraft was forced to ditch into the Bay of Naples after a perilous bombing mission. This is a story we learned only through our research and my mother’s treasured scrapbook.
We thought she had nothing to worry about. She passed away five days later. Something had to be done. My mother’s cherished memories could not be forgotten. We needed a way to honor and remember my mother, her late husband and all the heroes of her generation. Strata Aviation Arts was created to accomplish this ideal.
